Pine Haven Christian Communities added a new $20-million, 95,000 square-foot building to accommodate the growing senior population in the Sheboygan area in 2015. The organization planned to implement an innovative design known as the “household” model of care, where the comforts of home and neighborhood are replicated, replacing conventional long corridors with identical rooms. Small numbers of residents were to be grouped together in “houses,” each with its own living, dining, kitchen and laundry areas.
The interior design of each “home” utilized seven different, yet complementary styles to achieve the household concept. Design themes used the variety of color palettes to provide individuality and to help with wayfinding.
This project was phased and required connection of the new building to an existing residential care complex on site. A two-person crew from H.J. Martin and Son completed the work over a six-month period from February through July 2015.
