Project Description:

After passing a $68.25M facilities referendum in April 2017, big projects were set in place for local Green Bay schools, including Sullivan Elementary. Sullivan Elementary located, on the East side of Green Bay, received $2.6M to expand and renovate their current elementary school for grades PK-5. The addition will increase their capacity to 700 students.

Four divisions of H.J. Martin and Son worked together on this project to help with the remodeling of a few classrooms, cafeteria, as well as various hallways and offices throughout the school. Working alongside IEI Contractors, H.J. Martin and Son also helped with several additions to the school including two new music rooms, an art room, and other classrooms.

The Sullivan Elementary Tigers school colors of green, blue, and grey were chosen for the carpet tile flooring in the band and music rooms to help tie in the school’s brand in the design. The school’s colors were also carried through on the 2,500 sq. ft. of tiled walls in the bathrooms.

Crossville grey ceramic tile was installed in all of the bathrooms across the school totaling 1,000 s.q ft. A tan Nora rubber tile was also installed in the 6,000 sq ft cafeteria with green-tiled walkways added, in between which the cafeteria tables will be placed. This rubber tile was also installed at the various entrances across the school.

Forbo vinyl composition tile was used in various storage areas and hallways. Forbo Marmoleum flooring is the brand’s most popular linoleum flooring as is known for its sustainability and durability. A total of 755 sq. ft. was used on the Sullivan project and other past projects done by H.J. Martin and Son.

Issues with moisture control was a problem that the flooring division faced during this project. The concrete underneath the soon-to-be installed flooring wasn’t sealing properly and water was able to come up below it and potentially damage the flooring. The team of six installers performed moisture mitigation to help solve this issue and better control the moisture underneath the flooring. Six crew members helped with the installation of the flooring at Sullivan Elementary School over the summer of 2019.

The H.J. Martin and Son drywall team installed nearly 1,000 lineal feet of drywall through the entire remodel and new additions of the school. With six members on the team, it took around two months to install.

The Glass and Glazing Division of H.J. Martin and Son installed glass for entrances and windows throughout the school. They installed 1,000 sq. ft. of 601T 2×6 storefront windows on the front of the school as well as Kawneer storefront framing and glass for the school’s main entrance.

A unique item that Glass and Glazing division installed was Factory AA4325 windows on all of the exterior facing classrooms. These extra-strength windows are very durable and were installed for added security. Two installers were on the project from July 2019-August 2019.

A challenge that all divisions of H.J. Martin and Son faced during this project was the short timeline that many educational projects have. They often are required to do projects over the summer while classes aren’t in session, which only gives the installers around two months to finish.
