Supporting One of Our Own

H.J. Martin and Son is like a big family, with employees upwards of 600. When one falls ill, you better believe each and every one steps up to help with a “whatever it takes” attitude.

In December, our employees, outside partners, family members and the community came together to raise money for one of our own, Marty Schaut. Marty has been with H.J. Martin and Son, working hard in our Green Bay warehouse for 33 years.

Marty was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung and spine cancer. Instead of backing down, Marty took it head on with radiation and chemotherapy and is well on his way to fighting his cancer.

As Marty underwent treatment, the planning got underway for a benefit to help raise money for his medical bills. People donated their time, their talents and their treasures, as the old saying goes. Autographed Packer items, spa packages, tools, apparel, gift certificates, home items…you name it, donations piled high to help Marty. So many items were donated that there was a silent auction at the annual holiday party (prior to the scheduled benefit), with a special dance floor tribute to Marty.

The benefit took place on December 9 and was attended by hundreds of people. There was food, silent auction items, raffles, a bean bag tournament (complete with a trophy) and even a live band. A huge thank you to Outlaw Junkies for keeping the energy through the roof throughout the evening. Marty was unable to attend, but wrote a letter that CEO Edward Martin read. There wasn’t a dry eye, as we prayed for Marty’s speedy recovery.

The benefit was a resounding success, but at the end of the day, it really comes down to our people. The people at H.J. Martin and Son care. They care about their clients, they care about the quality they deliver with each and every job, and most importantly, they care about their own. It’s about coming together to do what they know their fellow employees would do for them, should the need ever arise.

A few weeks after the benefit, Marty was presented with a check for $10,000. That speaks to the generosity at this company and SO many others who care so much for Marty. Marty, we’re behind you 100%…cheers to you and cheers to your health!
