Company Description: H.J. Martin and Son is a diversified construction company specializing in commercial and residential flooring, glass and glazing, walls and ceilings, commercial doors and hardware, and millwork and fixture installation.

Director of Safety & Loss Control Position Description: This position ensures the safety of the workplace and job sites while making sure employees adhere to all OSHA regulations and company guidelines, by coordinating, administering, and implementing comprehensive training programs in occupational, industrial, and environmental safety.

Director of Safety & Loss Control Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage, motivate, and develop safety awareness within the company and throughout the company’s various job sites
  • Assist Project Managers, Installation Managers, and other employees in applying safety methods when facing construction challenges
  • Interact effectively with the team; provide an advanced level of safety knowledge and support, and offer solid leadership and judgment while evaluating job site safety-related issues and potentially hazardous conditions
  • Plan and direct all aspects of health and occupational safety on the job sites
  • Design occupational safety and health education curriculum by developing preventive maintenance and operational programs and protocols, along with job hazard awareness
  • Conduct routine job site inspections to assess safety deficiencies, and hazardous conditions and develop appropriate proactive action or plans
  • Design and implement safety and first-aid training programs
  • Perform accident/incident investigations and maintain documentation and records
  • Develop and conduct training on safety-related topics and make sure everyone has a thorough understanding of all federal and state regulations including company safety policies and procedures
  • Manage and oversee company substance abuse policies
  • Manage company and DOT vehicle policies
  • Manage insurance programs and claims management process, review insurance carrier’s reports, and provide corrective actions
  • Track worker’s compensation, auto, property claims, and coverage; work with the insurance carrier to ensure that claims are managed properly and efficiently
  • Assist injured workers in the temporary transitional return to work program
  • Manage equipment and vehicle loss investigations, and file necessary claims recuperating applicable funds from insurance carriers
  • Coordinate project safety requirements, and protocols including designated medical clinics and drug testing
  • Assure that all employees have the proper training and certification on standards and equipment being used
  • Attend all safety-related meetings with General Contractors
  • Perform site-specific job hazard analysis, review site hazard analysis with Project Manager and site foreman
  • Mentor and coach safety coordinators, and assist them in conducting site-specific safety audits, accident investigations, and weekly safety inspections
  • Complete the required annual OSHA analysis
  • Maintain numerous company policies such as Safety and Apprentice Utilization policies
  • Provide necessary safety information for all pre-bid packets

Other Duties As Assigned:  Performs other related duties as assigned including supporting team members in the completion of their work for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the business.
