Company Description: H.J. Martin and Son is a diversified construction company specializing in commercial and residential flooring, glass and glazing, walls and ceilings, commercial doors and hardware, and millwork and fixture installation.
Position Description: This position is responsible for sales and management of commercial flooring, tile, and polished concrete projects. Success in this role requires excellent communication with customers, General Contractors, internal teams, and field installers.
Principal Responsibilities:
Project Management Responsibilities:
- Analyze job sites for potential problems and issues that may arise during installation and use this information to accurately project worker production and job costs.
- Complete bid sheets, and proposals, including labor estimates, to project the cost of projects.
- Field measure project sites to ensure accurate material estimating, either personally completing take-offs or passing along to the estimators.
- Determine the level of profit margin on bids to increase chances of landing a project.
- Prepare and type project proposals/bids making sure to clearly list pricing and any special conditions or exclusions that may apply, to avoid confusion regarding the specifics of a bid.
- Follow up on all outstanding bids to check the results and use this information to improve bidding accuracy.
- Complete accurate job activations in Vista software for projects that have been awarded.
- Work with customers and H.J. Martin and Son Installation Managers to determine the schedule for work.
- Provide project specifics to H.J. Martin and Son Installation Managers and make them aware of any special conditions of a job. Monitor your ongoing jobs and any potential problems.
- Use Vista software to track the progress of my projects and maintain communication with H.J. Martin and Son Installation Managers to ensure production goals are met.
- Troubleshoot and problem solve when unexpected issues arise on a project to minimize lost time and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Communicate with customers during and after installation to make sure their expectations are met, and they are satisfied with the final product.
- Use Vista software to check final project results, compare this to estimates, and look for ways to improve.
- Attend weekly Monday morning commercial sales meetings to go over weekly bids and discuss any issues.
- Attend weekly commercial flooring department meetings to review current jobs, upcoming projects, and address any issues.
- Track project change orders and follow up if necessary to ensure contract/PO is revised for accurate billing.
Sales Responsibilities:
- Attend meetings, trade shows, and other events that will generate face time with end users, facility managers, architects, and designers.
- Serve as the point person for developing strong vendor relationships, especially with Starnet Preferred Vendors. Attend as many vendor training sessions and /or vendor shows as possible.
- Develop a working knowledge of potential new business/projects via lead sharing, lead service (internal bid tracking), and frequent communication with design clients, end users, and vendor partner representatives. Actively call on potential customers and visit in person to increase market share, client base, and business opportunities.
- Foster good working relationships and communication with current customers to ensure repeat business and increase direct referrals.
- Work directly with customers to specify the flooring products that will best fit their needs, and use this information with vendors to gain a competitive pricing advantage over other contractors at bid time.
- Help customers with value engineering solutions when they are over budget, to specify products with similar performance and design, at a better price.
- Cross sell other divisions of H.J. Martin and Son (floorcare, glass, walls & ceilings, polished concrete, millwork/fixture installation, and doors) whenever the opportunity arises.
Other Duties As Assigned: Performs other related duties as assigned including supporting team members in the completion of their work for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the business.
Experience/Education Required:
- Experience in flooring or other commercial construction is preferred, but not required
- Must be proficient in Outlook, Word, and Excel
- A degree in construction, architectural design, or other related area of focus is preferred, but not required
- Must be organized, have great math skills, have attention to detail, and the ability to self-manage time and prioritize accordingly
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.
