NORTHEAST WISCONSIN, 1/1/10/Women Magazine/New Style for the New Year:

There’s a new decade in front of us, just waiting to wow us with innovative styles.  Your home doesn’t have to be brand new to take advanatage of the latestest designs, however.  Updating what you have can refresh your home, which a price-tag that’s appealing to budget-minded decorators.

FLOORING

Floors seem to experience it all, from spills to muddy boots.  After years of use, re-placing a tired, old carpet may be the best way to improve your home.  Two popular flooring options are carpet and hardwood floors.

“The trend right now is hardwood flooring,” says Cynthia Bestul, an interior designer at H.J. Martin.  “There’s so much variety when it comes to flooring now.  People no longer have to use oak wood, there’s a variety of species and finishes for hardwood floors.”

The price range for hardwood floors is wide from $5 to $50 a square foot.  If that’s not in your budget, carpet is a lower cost alternative.

“Carpet can really freshen up a room,” says Bestul.  “It’s also probably the most cost effective flooring to put in your home.”

Like hardwood, carpet has a variety of styles to choose from.  Many styles of low profile carpets on the market right now have very attractive patterns, say Bestul, which offer a personal touch as well as a beautiful look.

If you’re not ready for an entire carpet overhaul, consider updating with an area rug.  Whether you’re covering a large or small area, these rugs can give a room that extra boost.

“A lot of shag carpets are available right now that make the coolest area rugs,” says Bestul.  “All you need to do is select the style and have it bound.”

TILES

If you’re looking for a way to update your kitchen or bathroom, consider adding or changing existing backsplash tiles to brighten things up.

Tiles come in a variety of colors, as well as different textures and designs.  There are tiles that give the look of distressed metal, aged wallpaper, or stone.  Looking to add a touch of personal flair?  Consider designing a pattern or image out of mosaic glass tiles.

“If you’re really looking for a way to update a room and create a difference then use glass mosaics,” says Bestul.  “With updated glass mosaics you can create glass on glass, glass on stone, or glass on metal.  There are so many options.  The sky is the limit when it comes to tile and stone.

If your budget doesn’t allow for a large surface to be tiled, Bestul suggests using tile in small ways.  For example, add tile to a small area in the kitchen or bathroom rather than an entire wall surface.

PAINT

Adding a new paint color to a room is the most budget friendly way to update a home.  “Paint is one of the easiest and quickest ways to change the mood and feel of a room,” says Bestul.

QUICK BUDGET TIPS

When selecting tile, consider the foundation of your home.  Many people want to install ceramic, granite, or other heavy materials in their homes, says Bestul.  Not all homes are built equally, so be sure your home can support heavier materials.
