For the third time in four years, a flooring installer from H.J. Martin and Son has been honored by Flooring Covering Installer magazine in its annual Installation Awards.  Rob Pomeroy, in his 14th year with the company, was recognized in the Commercial-Carpet category for his work as the lead installer on the 2016 remodel of Camera Corner Connecting Point in Green Bay.

Rob Pomeroy was joined on the project by Don Pomeroy and an assortment of H.J. Martin and Son team members, with crew size ranging from 3-6 employees.

Camera Corner Connecting Point (CCCP) had operated at the downtown corner of Main St. and Monroe Ave. since 1989, and after nearly three decades its office areas were due for a complete remodel.  Because of its many years of use and re-carpeting, up to four layers of adhesive had to be removed in some places before the installation could begin.

“The biggest challenge was in getting all of the glue off of the floor,” Rob Pomeroy told Floor Covering Installer.  “We coated the floor with flour and used a broom to evenly spread it out.  Then we used a ride-on machine and buffers, with a scrape-away head attachment.”

There also were several areas of the sub-floor which were cracked or had sizable dips, requiring remedy, according to Pomeroy.  The H.J. Martin and Son installation team ground down the high spots and utilized more than 3,500 pounds of UZIN by UFLOOR Systems to patch and level the CCCP floor, which had low spots as deep as 3-inches in some places.

J+J Flooring 24×24 walk-off carpet tile, Angulate 24×24 Ethos® backed carpet tile and Mohawk solid-color carpet tile then were installed once leveling was completed.

The entire CCCP project was completed over a three-month period from September to November 2016.

Now in their fourth year, the Floor Covering Installer Installation Awards honor “the most creative installers and most interesting installations in a range of flooring categories.”

“We are pleased that FCI readers continue to recognize the quality work of our installers,” says Edward Martin, CEO of H.J. Martin and Son.  “To have a third different installer win this award really affirms the skill level across our entire installation team.  Congratulations to Rob Pomeroy and everyone who worked on the Camera Corner Connecting Point project for a superior installation.”

Pomeroy told Floor Covering Installer Managing Editor Danielle Clair Simpson that making the customer happy and taking pride in the end result are what drive him, along with sharing the secret to his success.  “I was able to train under a senior team and was fortunate to learn from some of the best in the industry,” he said to FCI.  “They taught me right from wrong and how important it is to pay attention to detail.”

Previous winners from H.J. Martin and Son are installers John Lancor, in 2016 for his work on the Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology Center in Appleton, Wis., and Nick Mooren, in 2014 for his work at the Madison (Wis.) Central Public Library.
