H.J. Martin Interior Designer Valerie Greetan was among 51 Carpet One Floor & Home members from across the U.S. and Canada who met April 15-17 in Atlanta for the Advisory Council and Regional Networking Group (RNG) Coordinator Summit.

Such meetings occur twice per year, with the primary purpose being to inform the group on the direction the Carpet One brand is taking, and to get feedback and recommendations. Among the discussion items were future marketing, product, merchandising and technology strategies.

“This is the most valuable meeting we have,” says Eric Demaree, president of Carpet One Floor & Home.

A highlight of the meeting was the group’s trip to Dalton, Ga., where it had the opportunity to tour three plants operated by Shaw Industries. The group saw how Shaw designers gather data, along with samples of furniture, fabrics, clothing and other design industry information to use as the inspiration for new product.

“The Research and Development facility was fascinating,” says Greetan. “It inspired me to see the place where ideas and concepts become prototypes, then produced into the product that ends up in our stores and ultimately in our customers’ homes.

“I found that there is quite the science behind predicting the future in both trend and color forecasting.”

The summit attendees also visited the Shaw Re2E facility, which takes non-recyclable, post-consumer carpet and turns it into energy.

Another plant owned by Shaw recycles post-consumer nylon 6.6 into new nylon 6.6. One of the benefits of buying Tigressa Carpet, an exclusive Carpet One brand, is that retailers like H.J. Martin ultimately return both the carpet and pad to recycling facilities.
