Henry John and Margaret Martin established H.J. Martin & Son in 1931. Henry sold paint and tile out of his garage on Maple Street. His son, Patrick Henry Martin, joined the business after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1948.
Patrick Martin was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp in W.W.II. He flew 44 combat missions. Patrick was a highly decorated officer receiving 15 air metals, including the Presidential Unit Citation and two Distinguishing Flying Cross metals.
In 1956, Henry John Martin passed away and Patrick and Mary Ellen Martin became the new owners of the company. In 1959, Patrick moved the company to the existing location at 320 S. Military Avenue. At that time, the name of the company was changed to H.J. Martin & Son.
In 1978, Edward N. Martin joined H.J. Martin & Son, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He was named the President in November of the same year. Patrick Martin passed away in October of 1995; Edward and Terri Martin purchased the company in May of 1996.
H.J. Martin & Son continues to work hard to maintain its position as a partner in the community.
