HJ Martin – Carpet One conference: Interview with designer Melissa

Carpet One conference: Interview with designer Melissa

Posted on January 27, 2016 by

A few of our H.J. Martin and Son team members had the opportunity to attend the Carpet One Conference in Orlando, Florida in early January. We took a few minutes to get the details from Interior Designer, Melissa Kalupa!

Tell us a little bit what this conference is about.

Carpet One is a buying group H.J. Martin and Son is a part of. By being a part of this group, we are able to buy products at lower prices allowing the customer to receive better pricing. The conference highlights additional training for programs we use, social media techniques, ways to use new trends, including the color of the year, listening to motivational speakers, and, of course, a look at new products that are launched.

Are there any new products that are launching?

There are some new SmartStrand/Innovia & Innovia Touch carpets, and we will be stocking a new hardwood from the Hanover Hills collection. There were quite a few tiles from a number of vendors, including both field and mosaic tiles. Armstrong is coming out with a new technology on their luxury vinyl products to help fight against wear and tear.

Did you attend any seminars while you were there?

I went to a Houzz seminar and to learn how to leverage the latest assets on Houzz to further provide tools and ideas to our clients. Clients love to see finished projects, so we will be working as a team to grow our base of photographed jobs for a variety of project types.

Were there any notable speakers or guests?

The key note speaker was Jeremy Gutsche and he talked about ways to use innovation to generate ideas with an ever changing market. (*See additional information below the gallery.)

Why is it important to attend these types of conferences? What are the benefits you bring back to our clients?

It is good to always be meeting with other vendors to see what materials are new and how they are being incorporated in other environments and spaces. We can also learn about what new products are being released, so we can always present our customers with the latest trends.

How did it benefit you personally?

This was my first time attending the Carpet One Convention. It was very beneficial to see how large Carpet One is and how much H.J. Martin and Son benefits from being a part of this cooperation. We can get great pricing for products that are very high quality, because we are able to purchase them as a buying group. It’s also very beneficial because vendors want to sell their products to Carpet One, which is a very exclusive group of successful flooring businesses.
