Henry John and Margaret Martin established H.J. Martin in 1931. Henry was previously employed as a butcher in the Milwaukee area and later joined the Nor Corp Manufacturer in Green Bay. Henry left the Nor Corp Manufacturer and started to sell paint and tile out of his garage on Maple Street. In 1931, he established H.J. Martin Company. In 1944, he opened a small showroom and shop on Velp Avenue. His son, Patrick Henry Martin, joined the business after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1948. |

Patrick Martin was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp in W.W.II. He flew 44 combat missions. Patrick was a highly decorated officer receiving 15 air metals, including the Presidential Unit Citation and two Distinguishing Flying Cross metals.
In 1956, Henry John Martin passed away and Patrick and Mary Ellen Martin became the new owners of the company. In 1959, Patrick moved the company to the existing location at 320 S. Military Avenue. At that time, the name of the company was changed to H.J. Martin & Son, Inc. During the 1960's, H.J. Martin & Son, Inc. consisted of three divisions: Commercial Flooring, Glass and Glazing, and Residential Retail Flooring.
In 1978, Edward N. Martin joined H.J. Martin & Son, Inc., after graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He was named the President in November of the same year. Patrick Martin passed away in October of 1995; Edward and Terri Martin purchased the company in May of 1996. |

Edward Martin was determined to diversify H.J. Martin and Son, Inc.'s product and service offering, with that in mind he added the Drywall Division and shortly after, the Fixture Installation Division. Most recently, the company added two more divisions consisting of Full Service Floor Care and the Commercial Door and Hardware Division.

Martin and Son, Inc. has grown to become a national company and a leader in the industry.
